This Little Light of Mine

It is hard to imagine anything good coming out of the Middle East these days. Terror, war, a death toll that staggers our contemporary imagination. But even in 1 BC, Nazareth, a tiny farming village of 2000 people, was not in a peaceful world.

In the century before Christs’s birth the Romans went from a republic to an empire with a dictator and continued expanding their empire through violent conquest. The people of Nazareth kept safe by hiding in their underground storage pits when violence threatened their village.

What good can come out of such a place? What good can come out of our current time when we see a world in chaos?

Everyone is worried about inflation and politics and what is rolling through the never-ending news feed often designed to outrage. There are always real things to be angry about, but a constantly refreshed doom scroll delivered to our devices messes with us. It really sucks the joy out of life. We should all chuck the enraging stuff and stick to the cat videos.

So what good is there? Lots. People do good every day. They will not make the news for doing it, but you know it happens. Here at Kreider Services every day, 24 hours a day, people focus on care, support and bring joy to folk’s lives. They are working, volunteering, and hustling to improve people’s lives. We are not alone in this, almost no one starts their day thinking “what kind of misery can I bring to the world?”

Not to sound too cherrful, but if you unplug and look around, even in dark times there is still light. Inflation, wars, and conflict are always with us. We get through by getting up and working to make things better.

Hug your kids, tell your family and friends you love them. The more you do it the easier it is the next time. Celebrate the holidays the way you like. Regardless of your faith, or even your non-belief, we can all work to find some joy.

If you can, give Kreider Services a donation, and give to other causes you support too! If you cannot, do what you can to keep the spirit of the holidays alive and make the world better.

If God can bring light to the world from a tiny farm town with people who regularly hide in storage pits to avoid roaming armies, here in the Midwest we can get ourselves together and bring some joy to our families and friends in our small towns. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!
